Inline Skates Brakes

roller skating down driveway?
I just got a pair of inline roller skates with the brake on the back. So, I’m a beginner and I don’t know how to begin to go down the driveway. It’s only a slight incline but i still cant control the brake or stop.
how did you conquer this? and do i have to fall a lot in order to learn?
I am happy to hear that someone wants to be good at stopping before heading down the street.
Your heel brake is the easiest and fastest way to stop. I am assuming that you have a standard brake rather than an ABT brake by Rollerblade. The ABT is intended for a different technique but can also be used as a standard brake.
The usual problem (haven’t seen a different one from a person with the “I can’t stop” complaint yet) is that the person is not scissoring their feet enough yet.
Scissoring is spreading your feet forward and back. It is key to several skills including using a heel brake. You need to be comfortable enough to bend your knees to do it well.
To stop well, you should have the front skate entirely in front of the front wheel of the rear skate. The farther forward you can get the brake foot, the faster you can stop. I can get more than a foot of gap between my skates.
Try scissoring with each skate forward so see which way is more comfortable. If you are one of the people who can do it better with the left foot forward, you can usually swap the brake to the left foot.
Other skills for scissoring.
If you lean a little and twist the front skate, that will start you on a parallel turn. It allows you to turn at much faster speeds than the usual “A turn”.
If you bend your knees more, put more weight on the back foot, and put more weight on the back wheel of each foot, you can roll over bad areas or onto grass to stop. This is called a grass stop even though you don’t have to actually stop. With practice you can glide across gravel roads across your route or down grassy hills.
