Easton Hockey Shafts And Blades
What does ABS mean on hockey sticks?
im lookin at the:
Easton Stealth S5 Hockey Shaft & Blade Combo
* Eliptical profile for torsional control
* Dogbone shaft geometry
* Micro-bladder process
and
Easton Stealth S5 SR ABS Hockey Shaft & Blade Combo
* Performance pultrusion
* Carbon/glass construction
look the same and price is the same which should i buy?
Flamesfan nailed the acronym, which is a mouthful for sure.
ABS is essentially a thermoplastic material which can be shaped, manipulated, molded and curved with the application of heat. The material is used in the blade manufacturing process by a a number of different companies, to help provide a more durable base or runner than wood can.
ABS also serves as a stiffening agent in blade manufacturing, but the downside is decreased feel and increased weight, as compared to wood.
As for the two shaft options you’ve outlined above, it reads to me as both ends of a transition product, meaning they are different product designs with the same name, being sold for the same price.
What you refer to as the the S5 ABS was formerly known as the Octane. The pultruded shaft construction of that model is considered low-tech and definitely low-performance. As the older or pre-transition model, this product should really be sold at a discount versus the new design.
You see, once the manufacturing of that model moved to Asia, the new factory switched to a bladder molding process that can more effectively manipulate wall thickness and geometry to provide a higher level of performance. The eliptical profile and dogbone geometry reflect the improvements in design that make the latest version of the S5 far superior to its predecessor.
Go with option 1, not because of the blade but because of the higher grade shaft.
Good luck.
